Abstract

To restore the sturgeon stocks exhibiting depressed reproductive performance, it is necessary to form reproductive broodstocks in hatcheries. The formation of broodstocks using closed-water-supply installations remains imperfect due to low breeding performance of spawners. This study aimed to employ a non-invasive, rapid ultrasound diagnostic method for early detection of pathologies and diseases in sturgeon internal organs. In addition to two-dimensional black-and-white imaging, the following Doppler techniques were used: pulse-wave and continuous-wave Doppler imaging, tissue harmonic imaging, energy Doppler, and elastography. If 2D sonographic data did not provide sufficient information about the anatomy, panoramic ultrasound scanning was performed. Regular ultrasonographic studies of the abdominal organs in sturgeon, conducted in 2018–2024 at 20 fish farms across Eastern and Western Siberia, the Urals, the European part of Russia, and the Elbrus region, revealed a number of common pathologies and diseases: cystic and polycystic disease of the reproductive system and liver, fatty degeneration of the gonads and liver, atrophy and torsion of testes, neoplasms in the generative tissue, hermaphroditism, thickening of gallbladder walls and sludge, oedema and others. At some facilities, the number of individuals with internal-organ developmental disorders reached 67.9 %, with an average of 24.8 %. Ultrasonic scanning identified three stages of cystic degeneration of ovaries in females. Notably, there was a significant increase in females aged over 9 years with replacement of generative tissue by connective tissue (13.6 % of individuals). Through ultrasonic monitoring and histological studies of the nature of ‘ink spots’ on the skin epithelium of Siberian sturgeon spawners from the Lena population of natural origin, malignant cutaneous neoplasms were identified and treatment avenues outlined. Thus, annual ultrasonographic monitoring of sturgeon internal organs for early detection of pathological changes will enable timely preventive and therapeutic measures for the fish
