- Abstract
The biochemical composition of brine shrimp Artemia cysts is an important indicator of the nutritional value of Artemia for aquaculture facilities. The interest in such studies is also caused by the fact that Artemia cysts, which are easy to collect, especially in shallow waters, are subjected to illegal capture. Therefore, attempts are made to identify cysts in the population by various parameters. Data on the amino acid contents can serve as an addition to these studies. The purpose of the present research was to study the intra- and interpopulation variability of protein and amino acid composition in Artemia cysts, evaluate the quality of cysts in terms of amino acid content, and determine the possibility of their population identification based on these parameters. The study was conducted on cysts from Siberian populations (11 lakes), Kalmykia (Bolshoe Yashaltinskoye), Crimea (Sivash), and Uzbekistan (Aral) collected from the water bodies in the summer and autumn periods of 2010–2019. Before analysis, the cysts were decapsulated in a solution of sodium hypochlorite, washed, and dried. The amino acid composition was determined by capillary electrophoresis with spectrophotometric detection. The study showed lower intrapopulation variability in protein content (% of wet material) and some amino acids (Glu+Gln and Asp+Asn) in most cases compared to the interpopulation variability. Significant differences were found in the amino acid composition of cysts in some populations, making it possible, to some extent, to identify their population affiliation, which can be used along with other methods. A comparative analysis of our results and the literature data showed that the cysts from the populations we studied had lower contents of some amino acids compared to the populations of the tropics and subtropics
