- Abstract
In recent decades, Russia has experienced an increase in domestic tourism, which may exert negative impacts on unique and vulnerable ecosystems of mountain lakes. Lake Bolshoye Pezo is one of the lakes of the Kanskoye Belogorye (the Eastern Sayan), which is home to an endemic population of grayling Thymallus arcticus Pall., listed in the Red Book of Krasnoyarsk Krai. In order to create a scientific basis for the rational recreational use of the lake, a comprehensive hydrobiological study of its ecosystem was carried out at the end of August 2025. This lake, with ultra-fresh water, had ubiquitously developed macrophytes, high transparency, and slightly alkaline pH; it was ultra-oligotrophic in terms of mineral nitrogen and total phosphorus content and alpha-oligotrophic in terms of phytoplankton biomass, dominated by the small-celled green alga Ankistrodesmus closterioides. In contrast, zooplankton biomass was high, corresponding to the alpha-mesotrophic status, dominated by large herbivorous cladocerans (Daphnia cf. longispina) and copepods (Acanthodiaptomus tibetanus). The biomass of zoobenthos corresponded to the same trophic status; it was dominated by larvae of chironomids, Megaloptera, caddisflies, and amphipods, with high productivity in terms of the sum of polyunsaturated fatty acids EPA+DHA (1.09 ± 0.37 mg m-2 day-1, 28.54 ± 7.56 mg m-2 year-1). The abundance and biomass of grayling fingerlings were estimated based on net catches (2106 specimens ha -1, 4.42 kg ha-1), and those of adult individuals – using the hydroacoustic method (231 specimens ha-1 and 25.4 kg ha-1). A comparison of calculated diets of fingerlings and adult graylings with the production of food organisms showed that the food supply of fingerlings (zooplankton) was not fully utilized (free production of zooplankton was 2601 g ha-1 day-1) while the food supply of adults (zoobenthos) was insufficient (free production of zoobenthos was negative –161.7 g ha-1 day-1). The size and weight characteristics of graylings aged 3+ were inferior to those of individuals of populations from natural unpolluted habitats. The haplotype of the control region of mtDNA of the lake grayling turned out to be identical to the haplotype of Baikal grayling (Thymallus baicalensis Dybowski, 1874) in the upper reaches of the Angara River. Further molecular-genetic and ecological studies are needed to expand the scientific basis for determining the status and for conservation of the grayling population
