- Abstract
The growing tourist appeal of Siberian cities in the 21st century is linked, in particular, to the emergence of a significant number of street murals. This article analyzes the main trends in the development of Siberian street art in the 21st century: the transformation of the tag subculture into collaboration with city administrations to imbue urban space with ideal-forming meanings. The study examines various practices of Siberian street artists – tags, public art, murals, and interventions. Murals are identified as the most representative genre of contemporary Siberian street art, and the main thematic content of modern murals is identified – visualizations of scientific discoveries, fantastical and abstract themes, “genius loci” – famous individuals whose destinies are linked to the history of the city, etc. The article concludes that contemporary murals are created as part of commercial and urban design projects, while independent artistic creativity on the streets of Siberian cities is carried out in the genre of careful urban interventions
