Abstract

The thermal characteristics and elemental composition of pulp and paper industry by-products were studied: osprey, combustible materials from pulp and paper mill landfills, sewage sludge (SWS), various types of paper and their briquettes, bark and wood fuel (BWF), plastic, and ash generated during the combustion of BWF and plastic. The results of the study of the thermal characteristics of combustible materials from the landfills of two pulp and paper mills showed that they are distributed randomly and do not depend on the depth of the landfill. Therefore, when developing programs for their energy use, individual research is necessary to determine their thermal performance and the available total energy potential. A comprehensive analysis of personal protective masks was performed, demonstrating that three-layer masks made of non-woven polymeric materials have a very high specific heat of combustion and yield of volatile substances. The specific heat of combustion of two-layer cotton masks is almost three times lower, and the yield of volatile substances is also significantly lower. The results obtained for two-layer masks are close to those typical for paper materials made from wood pulp. It is shown that promising options for plastic recycling include its incorporation into wood and paper briquettes, as well as pellets. Recommendations are provided for the energy recovery of various types of waste, including a forecast of possible contamination of layered combustion chambers.
