Abstract

This article examines the circumstances of the discovery of human skeletal remains in two medieval (second half of the 10th century) dwellings in the settlement Kulunigy 5. The case was examined comprehensively, and hypotheses were put forward regarding the causes of the villagers’ deaths and the abandonment of their bodies in their homes. Archaeological and anthropological data were analyzed, as well as ethnographic sources from the 18th‑20th centuries on the Eastern Khanty. It was established that the most likely causes of the mass deaths were famine or epidemic. The case studied illustrated the adaptive potential and factors of social resilience of the medieval population of the Surgut Ob region
