Abstract

Current study discussed the first paleoanthropological data from the Great Migration Period in the Surgut Ob region – a sample from the Svyashchennaya Kedrovaya Roshcha ground. Diligent fieldwork and subsequent restoration work allowed to examine the dental data of 38 individuals. The sample was characterized using an expanded dental non-metric program and compared with the Great Migration Period, the Middle Ages, and near-modern groups of Western Siberia. The study revealed a stable anthropological composition of the Middle Ob region population. Its distinctive dental features – lower frequencies of shovel- shaped medial incisors and increased frequencies of deflecting wrinkle on the first lower molars – are chronologically stable and describe the uniqueness of not only Migration Period and medieval groups, but also near-modern Ugric populations, particularly the eastern Khanty of the Vakh and Vasyugan rivers
