- Abstract
This article presents the results of an archaeoparasitological analysis of soil samples collected from the sacral surface of 20 individuals buried in the Surgut urban cemetery, dating from the late 17th to the early 20th centuries. Helminth eggs belonging to Diphyllobothrium sp. (75 % of individuals) and the family Opisthorchiidae (70 %) were identified. The overall prevalence of fish-borne parasitic infections in the population reached 100 %. The high prevalence of these infections is associated with the regular consumption of raw and/or inadequately cooked fish, which is interpreted as an adaptation to northern environmental conditions and as a means of preventing scurvy. The helminth spectrum identified in the Surgut population was closest to that characteristic of indigenous and mixed populations of Western Siberia. At the same time, the absence of geohelminths may reflect the Siberian origin of the studied group. The absence of parasitoses caused by Taenia spp. is interpreted as indirect evidence for the lesser dietary role of domestic and wild mammalian meat compared with fish and game
