- Abstract
Infrastructure is crucial for ensuring high-quality organisation of any sporting events in the country. Therefore, since 2010, the certification procedure for sports facilities in the Russian Federation has become mandatory as introduced by an additional article 37.1 to Federal Law No. 329-FZ ‘On Physical Culture and Sport in the Russian Federation’ of 4 December 2007. The Russian Orienteering Federation has difficulty obtaining approval of the Russian Ministry of Sport on the venues for skiing disciplines, citing the need to use forest areas with different natural characteristics, while the strict certification of venues does not allow for the proper equipping of competition arenas. The analysis of the certified sports facilities used for national-level skiing and biathlon events in the 2024–2025 competition season indicates that it is possible to hold ski orienteering competitions at these venues. As for today, 50–60 % of these complexes have the technical resources to fully host these competitions. The further prospect of increasing the popularity and spectator appeal of ski orienteering disciplines lies in the preparation of sports maps of the terrain near the remaining sports facilities for ski racing disciplines
