- Abstract
The study examines the status of the work- object in art theory through philosophical, aesthetic, and historical analysis – tracing its evolution from ancient concepts to contemporary semiotic, phenomenological, and materiality-based approaches. The article traces the key theoretical paradigms: from ancient mimesis and the medieval understanding of the artwork as a sign of divine design, through Renaissance anthropocentrism and classical aesthetics, to twentieth-century formalism, the phenomenological-hermeneutic tradition, and structuralism. Contemporary theoretical projects: media theory and speculative realism are examined as openings toward a non-anthropocentric understanding of the work-object as a distinctive entity capable of acting as a metaphorical bridge between other objects. The theory of art by V. I. Zhukovsky and his co-authors occupies a significant place in the study of the status of the work-object
