- Abstract
The butterfly fauna of the Eastern European Hypoarctic zone includes 84 species of 6 families and 37 genera. The present article analyzes in detail 14 local faunas, whose composition and the habitat status of the species have been most fully identified. The study shows that the local faunas of the Polar and Prepolar Urals are superior to the lowland faunas in terms of species richness due to the presence of specific montane species, which may constitute up to 25 % of the total fauna. However, a comparison of local faunas, taking into account the habitat status of the species, did not show any pronounced lowland–mountain specificity: both lowland and mountain faunas mainly consist of common indigenous species, and the determining factor in their grouping is the level of species richness. The richest faunas are formed near large rivers, in regions with a developed transport network and considerable areas of anthropogenic natural communities. As climate is warming, these factors of geo- diversity contribute to the rapid penetration of temperate species into the Hypoarctic zone and their quick naturalization in local conditions. Thus, the composition and the landscape–zonal structure of the Hypoarctic faunas are gradually transformed, acquiring a boreal appearance. A biogeographic feature of the butterfly fauna of the Eastern European Hypoarctic zone is the presence of “Siberian” species: the Ural Mountains constrain the westward dispersal of 10 species and 2 subspecies, and the geographic range of 8 more species extends to the western boundaries of the Bolshezemelskaya Tundra
