- Abstract
The present study reports results of characterizing comparatively the meiozoobenthos structure of small water bodies (ponds, puddles) in three regions of the extreme northeast of European Russia and the adjacent Trans-Urals. In July and August, 54 water bodies were investigated: in the southeastern part of the Bolshezemelskaya Tundra (41 water bodies), on the eastern slope of the Polar Urals (9 water bodies), and on the western slope of the Subpolar Urals (4 water bodies). Eleven taxonomic groups of aquatic organisms and 60 species of oligochaetes (Oligochaeta) and crustaceans (Cladocera, Cyclopoida, Harpacticoida) have been identified. Rare species of copepods (Moraria harbei), cladocerans (Rhynchotalona latens), and oligochaetes (Bratislavia palmeni) for the study regions and Russia have been recorded. The greatest richness of species was found in the Subpolar Urals. In terms of abundance, meiobenthos was dominated by nematodes and copepods. The Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) showed that the main environmental factors determining the meiofauna structure of the benthic communities in the study water bodies are calcium and sodium ion concentrations and the value of water pH. The abundance of some dominant species of aquatic organisms was associated with the gradient of these factors and total iron concentration, while others were not linked to them. The data obtained confirm the sensitivity of meizooobenthos diversity indicators to environmental chemistry and the regional specificity of meiofauna. The results emphasize the need to take into account the characteristics of these communities and taxocenes in small water bodies when assessing and monitoring biodiversity in northern ecosystems
