Abstract

Using isolated genomic DNA samples of the tundra shrew (Sorex tundrensis) from the Malozemelskaya Tundra, Bolshezemelskaya Tundra, and the taiga zone of the Northern Urals, along with the data available in the NCBI GenBank database, the genetic diversity of the species in northeastern European Russia was analyzed using the mtDNA cytb gene. The study showed that tundra shrews of the forest and tundra forms, inhabiting remote localities, demonstrate a high degree of genetic diversity. Analysis of genetic distances also revealed the isolation of the group of samples from the Malozemelskaya Tundra (1.8 %) and their proximity to the common shrew (Sorex araneus) compared to other S. tundrensis samples (5.8 %). The differentiating craniometric traits of the upper tooth row and intermediate teeth in the common and tundra shrews may overlap. Tundra shrews from the Malozemelskaya Tundra likely represent a borderline group at the northwestern boundary of their range
