- Abstract
This study examines the relationship between the official status of the Kazakh language as a state language and its actual patterns of use. The Kazakh language has held the status of the state language in Kazakhstan since 1989; however, Russian continues to be widely used across various domains, and concerns regarding the future of the Kazakh language persist among speakers. The study aims to assess the current level of development of the Kazakh language and to evaluate the potential for expanding its functional domains in accordance with state language policy. The analysis is based on the framework proposed in the UNESCO document Language Vitality and Endangerment, which includes nine evaluative factors. Data on language use were collected from multiple sources, including the national census of the Republic of Kazakhstan, official statistics from governmental institutions, social media platforms, and mass media content. The findings contribute to understanding the vitality and future prospects of the Kazakh language in contemporary sociolinguistic conditions
