- Abstract
The article is devoted to the theoretical interpretation of the oral poetry (zhyrau) of the 15th‑18th centuries in the context of modern folklore studies. The purpose of the study is to identify the scientific significance of the model developed by K. Zhanabayev for analysing the formulaic style of oral poetry and to determine the model’s place within modern theories of orality and epic memory. The object of this research is the oral poetry of the zhyrau of the 15th‑18th centuries as a system of traditional poetic knowledge of nomadic culture. The subject of the study is the formulaic style and sound organization of oral text, which ensure its preservation, reproduction and transfer within the conditions of oral tradition. The research materials consist of samples of Kazakh oral poetry of the 15th‑18th centuries, interpreted within the framework of K. Zhanabayev’s conceptual approach. The methodological basis of the study comprises historical‑genetic, textological, structural‑ semantic and functional methods of analysis, as well as the principles of the oral‑formulaic theory developed by Milman Parry and Albert B. Lord
