Abstract

The article is devoted to Glafira Makaryevna Vasilevich (1895–1971), an outstanding ethnographer, linguist and Tungusicologist, whose scientific activity began during the formation of the Leningrad ethnographic school. Vasilevich made an invaluable contribution to the study of the Evenks, their language and culture, leaving behind a rich scientific legacy: about 200 works, five dictionaries of the Evenk language, dozens of textbooks and the first extensive monograph on the Evenks. Despite the scale of her achievements, the importance of Glafira Makaryevna remained underestimated for a long time. The first serious studies about her appeared only at the beginning of the 21st century, but information about her personality remains fragmentary. This article seeks to fill this gap by presenting Glafira Makaryevna Vasilevich not only as an outstanding scientist, but also as a person. Based on little-known facts and memoirs of contemporaries, the authors reveal her character, life path and personal qualities that shaped her as a researcher. The purpose of the article is to create a completer and more multifaceted picture of Glafira Makaryevna Vasilevich, relying on unique sources. For the first time, Glafira Makarievna’s letters from the 1940s and 50s, addressed to her close friend Evgenia Eduardovna Blomqvist, are being introduced into scientific circulation. These letters allow us to reveal previously unknown facets of her professional and personal lives
