Abstract

Corporate social responsibility has long ceased to be an abstract, non-binding concept. Modern business organizations, especially large ones, can no longer operate without engaging in dialogue with the government and the residents of the regions where they operate on important issues related to ensuring the social and environmental conditions necessary for a comfortable life. Conditions have emerged for the formation of sustainable institutions, the ultimate goal of which is a voluntary, harmonious system of relations between business and society in the area of sustainable development – that is, ensuring economic development while taking into account the interests of the population. Post-Soviet countries were somewhat slow to develop modern approaches to socially responsible business, a delay caused by the complex transitional crisis that followed the collapse of the USSR. This also explains why the issue has been relatively understudied across this vast macroregion. This paper provides a brief overview of environmental and social policy practices in Central Asian countries based on an analysis of their public reporting on sustainable development. Using the example of large companies in the extractive sector in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, this study highlights the specific features of such activities, including in comparison with similar practices
