Abstract

The article is devoted to the musical aspects of the ritual practice of Tibetan Buddhism. In the Republic of Tuva, northern Buddhism is represented mainly by the Gelug school. The purpose of this work is to clarify the musical and ritual aspects of the Gelugpa tradition in the context of modern culture. The study was conducted using methods of included observation, interviews, and questionnaires. The respondents were Buddhist clergy from modern-day Tuva, including two Tibetan lamas and students from the Russian Buddhist University. The questionnaire contained 9 questions. The analysis of the answers showed that there are some differences within the same Gelug school. The research prospects include the clarification of special terminology, the deciphering of yang notation, the musicological analysis of canonical melodies, and the elucidation of the specifics of musical and ritual practices in various Gelug monasteries
