- Abstract
The object of this study is the Kazakh ritual vocabulary presented in the novel “Troubled times” by Kazhigali Mukhanbetkaliuly. The subject of the study is the translation techniques used in rendering the ritual vocabulary into Russian and English and translation shifts observed during the transfer. The analysis is carried out using linguocultural, axiological, comparative and translation approaches. An integrated approach allows us to identify semantic transformations as well as the degree of preservation of cultural and value load in indirect translation. The study demonstrated that translating ritual vocabulary is unavoidably entails translation shifts. While all translations underwent partial semantic, stylistic, cultural, axiological, and communicative shifts, certain rituals display full stylistic and cultural shifts. Future research may include comparing direct and indirect translations in order to identify differences in translation shifts
