- Abstract
Based on the recognition of the novel “Don Quixote” illustrations as a dynamic system of graphic interpretations of its content, the article examines the evolution of the M. Cervantes’s hero image in the light of the specific features of the cultural and historical contexts and artistic and visual styles and traditions of the time when the images were created. The study focuses on the transformation of Don Quixote visual image in 20th- century book editions and explores the semantic accents used by the novel’s illustrators. The study is based on three representative editions: the Madrid jubilee edition dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the great book, illustrated by the Spanish realist artist J. Jiménez Aranda (1905); the New York edition with the illustrations by D. Richards (1927); and the St. Petersburg edition illustrated by I. T. Bogdesko (1998). A comparative analysis involves examining both the individual style and the national and cultural characteristics of the Don Quixote images created by the representatives of different art schools and cultures around the world, including Spanish, American and Russian ones. The gained analysis results are relevant to the intersemiotic translation area, which in case of literary works illustration creation involves the visualization of artistic images
