Abstract

This article examines the metaphorical competence of bilingual students, understood as the ability to recognise, interpret and create metaphors (metaphorical expressions) within the context of the interaction between two language systems (Kazakh and Russian). Based on a free association experiment among students (Years 5 and 8) at schools where instruction is made in Kazakh, we have identified the peculiarities of metaphorical perception of these children of linguistic units in the Russian language. It was found that younger adolescents more often rely on standard linguistic clichés, whereas older students produce original metaphors and abstract images. A conclusion was drawn regarding the uneven development of metaphorical competence in a bilingual educational environment and the need for targeted pedagogical support to develop this competence
