Abstract

The article is an attempt at analysis and comparison of a wide spectrum of approaches in modern translation studies both to the description of the translation process itself and to the ways of teaching students how to interpret and translate. The authors conclude that because of the multidisciplinary character of translation studies different approaches to defining the essence of translation in most cases are not mutually exclusive. The differences are due to the fact that each school prioritizes a certain aspect of translation – linguistic, functional, communicative, pragmatic, etc., whereas in reality they are inextricably linked, and all of them, with their competent professional implementation yield equally good, if not identical, results. It is only necessary to clearly understand the correlation of all these aspects and the role of each in every individual discourse/text/utterance, and thus in the translation process and in the methods of teaching it
