- Abstract
Asian Russia represented by the Siberian and Far Eastern federal districts and the Tyumen region with its autonomous districts, has recently faced the threat of depopulation. The problem is largely caused by relatively less attractive economic opportunities and climate characteristics. The study analyzes the main demographic trends in the Asian part of Russia and also assesses the dynamics of human capital in the region. The latter is carried out using a retrospective approach. According to the calculations, 75–80 % of the new human capital put into operation compensates for the loss of human capital caused by the outflow of the population to the European part of Russia. Given the decrease in the birth rate in the region since 2012, we expect a slowdown in the growth rate of accumulation of human capital, followed by a decline in the next 15–20 years. This calls into question the effective sustainable development of the region and the Russian economy. Thus, this problem must be taken into account while designing programs for the development of Asian Russia. Emphasis should be placed on providing the necessary conditions for the reproduction and retention of human capital in the region
