Abstract

The article is devoted to the consideration of the cultural memory visualisation in photographic images taken by the famous Krasnoyarsk photographer Alexander Kuznetsov at the turn of the 20th‑21st centuries. From a great variety of projects, individual photos taken for the newspaper “Krasnoyarskiy Rabochiy” or for himself, several works were chosen that manifest the theme of time, history, memory and cultural transformations. These photographs are considered both as historical documents, recording the peculiarities of the time and as works of art, bearing more expressive impression of cultural memory. Relying on the theoretical basis of the works on cultural memory by A. Earll and M. L. Shub, on photography by S. Sontag and A. Bazen, methodological principles outlined in the contemporary theory of art by V. I. Zhukovsky and N. P. Koptseva, some of the master’s photographic works shown within the framework of the exhibitions “River of Time/Doing Time” and “Time over the Edge” were considered. Based on the analysis, it was concluded that the master’s works visualise the cultural memory of a certain epoch (Perestroika) and the cultural memory of a place (the Krasnoyarsk Krai as a territory of exile), reveal key images of the time and techniques that “hook” the viewer and actualise memories of the past
