Abstract

The article discusses the peculiarities of negative evaluation representation in polycode texts of conflict nature. The Internet memes and demotivators devoted to the war of the sexes, as well as xenophobic ones are in focus. It argues that the negative evaluation of the concepts (related by the author of the conflict texts to the “foe” pole within the “friend-foe” dichotomy) manifests in these texts by the implementation of sense components belonging to such categories as “subject”, “characteristic”, “action” and “situation”. Verbal and iconic means that are used to express the sense components and form a negative image of the subject of the “foe” pole are identified and analyzed with the help of semantic and semiotic methods. Such means include offensive nominations of subjects, their qualities, actions with a negative connotation, facial expressions of a negative mood, etc. The results substantiate the dependence of evaluation expression by means of certain iconic elements on the roles assigned by the author of the conflict text to the subjects of the dichotomy. The paper also describes the ways of expressing condemnation and negative evaluation of actions associated with the subject of the “foe” pole represented by verbal and non-verbal reactions of the subject of the opposite pole of the dichotomy. Thereafter it considers the features of the implementation of negative stereotypes, as well as the discrediting of social events on the basis of conflict situations constructed by the author of theses texts. Finally, the study puts into context the identified methods of negative evaluation intensification that include the use of expressive lexical means, stylistic means, caricatures, comparison and contrast
