Abstract

This article analyzed two articles on 19th-century painting, published in the periodical “Bulletin of Fine Arts”, published by the Imperial Academy of Arts, in the period from 1897 to 1890. An article by M. P. Solovyov “Painting of the 19th Century” published in parts in 1889 and 1890 was selected for analysis and the article “Sternberg’s Painting” by V. V. Stasov published in 1887. The selection of articles for analysis allowed us to explore the different methodological approaches of the authors. M. P. Solovyov focused on the development of 19th-century painting through the prism of social and socio-political processes. At the same time, the scrupulous approach of the author made it possible to describe in detail the work of many artists of the 19th century, relying on locality, narratives, plots, artistic techniques and academic traditions. As a result of the study, it was possible to establish the methodological and conceptual framework of Solovyov’s research approach, as well as provide a brief analysis of the main trends and narratives of 19th century painting in France, Germany, and Belgium. The value of V. V. Stasov’s article on the art of painting of the 19th century lies in the analysis of periodicals, letters, and memoirs of contemporaries. The critic, on the one hand, gives an artistic description of the work of V. I. Sternberg, on the other hand, reveals its value as a source of information that the artist presented in his letters about the life and everyday life of domestic artists. The research method is qualitative content analysis, historiographical analysis, as well as a methodological approach to the study of periodicals
