Abstract

The article examines the strategies of socio-economic adaptation of rural migrants living in squatter settlements (“nakhalovki”) in Ulan-Ude. Based on the materials of field research, the article refutes the notions of socio-economic homogeneity and marginalization of the residents of “nakhalovki”. Rural migrants living in these settlements are characterized by a variety of strategies of socio-economic adaptation in urban conditions. The results of the empirical study show that in “nakhalovki”, firstly, not only rural migrants with low incomes, but also those who have a medium and high level of wealth live in “nakhalovki”; secondly, the residents of “nakhalovki” not only work in the informal economy, but are also actively involved in the formal economy of the city. Also, three key economic orientations are characteristic for the residents of squatter settlements in Ulan-Ude: 1) involvement in the urban economy; 2) orientation to the rural economy; 3) mixed or translocal strategy. The choice of one or another strategy of socio- economic adaptation is predetermined by the structure of available capital and its conversion before moving to the city and after migration
