Abstract

In modern large cities, the significance of cemeteries is distorted due to desacralization, which is stimulated by alternative practices of their use, including as an object of sightseeing display. This conclusion was confirmed during interviews with participants of a specially organized tour of the Pyatnitsky cemetery, as well as its potential participants from among the students. Actualization of the historical and cultural potential of ancient cemeteries in the form of organized educational events seems to the authors to be one of the most effective and environmentally friendly tools for their protection in the conditions of modern secular mass everyday urban culture. However, the same measure is accompanied by a number of side deviant effects that can further enhance desacralization: an increase in the flow of people and noise, mediatization through advertising of excursions, the development of a secondary tourist-oriented business in the surrounding areas and others. Therefore, measures aimed at restoring or strengthening the physical and symbolic boundaries between the sacred and profane spaces are considered to be of primary importance. These include marking borders using information stands, signage, and plaques. This should contribute to strengthening self- control and restructuring the behavior of the cemetery visitor
