Abstract

This article examines the image of an ethnic migrant in Kazakhstani media discourse. As the material mass media with a wide audience coverage including “Egemen Qazaqstan”, “Kazakhstanskaya Pravda”, “Aiqyn”, “Vlast”, “Vechernyaya Astana”, “Argumenty i fakty Kazakhstan”, “Caravan”, “The Village”, as well as news feeds “Telegram”, “Kazinform”, “Tengri News”, “Nur.kz” were considered. The content analysis of the texts of news websites and printed newspapers (or their electronic versions) allowed us to identify popular topics and the discourse analysis used to determine the key meaning and characteristic tone of the publications’ content with the help of linguistic means. This reflects not only the author’s attitude, but also specific demands of society, making it an important indicator of public mood and assessment in the broadest sense of the word. The repatriate image created by media texts evolves in accordance with the geopolitical and socio-cultural context. Analytical review of Kazakhstani newspapers has revealed significant changes in the socio-psychological background of media information presentation. It is identified how the dual representation of the repatriate’s image, explicated by a restrained- friendly, as well as critically evaluated tone is gradually changing into a positive one
