- Abstract
The article presents the results of the study of the first Russian encyclopedias in the field of history and theory of art. These encyclopedias are considered from a conceptual position emphasizing that the encyclopedic image is a necessary part of national cultural identification, a form of preservation and reproduction of the historical and cultural memory of the nation. Russian encyclopedias in the field of history and theory of art create an image of Russia as a state with a unique artistic cultural space, where works of the rank of “masterpiece” are created, which are part of the world heritage and represent the Russian state as a developed national state, where the basic practices of the modernist project are carried out. The first specialized Russian encyclopedias in the field of history and theory of art act as a representative of the artistic practices of modernism, characteristic of the corresponding periods of the history of Russian culture
