- Abstract
The article examines the core concepts of culture that prevailed in Russia in the Late Middle Ages and were reflected in the art of the 16th‑17th centuries. The most important creative ideas that formed national self‑consciousness and became the basis of the worldview are highlighted: “besieged fortress”, the sacredness of the sovereign’s power, “Moscow is the third Rome”, bookishness and holiness. The contribution of domestic scientists to the problem of understanding national self‑consciousness and its components is summarized, the role of the phenomenon in the formation of the core concepts of the culture of the period under study is determined. The use of such an approach as a method for studying Russian culture of the Late Middle Ages, through creative ideas reflected in art, is a novelty of the study. An example is the artistic culture supported by the Ural‑ Siberian trade and industrial family of the Stroganovs on their lands. Through the core concepts it will be possible to identify the manifestation of national self‑awareness in all types of Stroganov art of that time: temple architecture, icon painting, church singing, etc.
