Abstract

The article examines a distinctive form of historical primitive from the 17th to 19th centuries – votive art (“ex voto”). While the tradition dates back to Antiquity, the novelty of the author’s approach lies in analyzing both artistic and religious aspects of Modern era samples prevalent in German territories (Bavaria, Austria). The study investigates easel votive panels along with silver votives depicting various body parts, created as temple offerings. The relevance of the stated issue is further enhanced by the study of not only the functional religious purpose of this form of Western European primitive, which was, on the one hand, to ask and receive mercy from a particular saint. On the other hand, the artistic form of votives is unique and demonstrates the possibilities of pictorial and plastic solutions, the peculiarities of themes, iconography, and, consequently, the spread of votive practices within a specific culture
