Abstract

The article presents the first results of the study of the ways of representing Siberian art in encyclopedic formats of different periods of the history of art and culture. The material for the study is the relevant articles of the Siberian Soviet Encyclopedia (1929–1937). The chronological and local framework of Siberian art is limited to the period of the last third of the 19th century – 1930s. The main ways of representing the history and theory of art, characteristic of encyclopedias in general, are determined. A number of specific features of the representation of Siberian Art of Modernity in the Siberian Soviet Encyclopedia are revealed. An assumption is made that the evaluative judgments about the significance of the work of artists, architects, writers, published in this publication, predetermine the corresponding judgments in art criticism and literary criticism of the modern period. At the same time, musical art is least represented in the Siberian Soviet Encyclopedia, with the exception of the musical art of indigenous Siberian peoples. The largest volume of information is related to Siberian fiction and journalism. Fine art and architecture of Siberia are presented in a fairly generalized manner, without stylistic analysis and without individual biographical articles (with rare exceptions) of masters of the arts. Art criticism concepts related to the history and theory of art and culture are completely absent. However, it was in such forms that narratives were created and manifestations of the significance of certain masters, works, artistic features were consolidated, characteristic of art criticism up to the present time
