Abstract

The limited export of traditional Russian forest products against the backdrop of slow growth in the domestic market raises the increasingly urgent question of how to make more effective use of the full range of benefits that forests offer. The article discusses two areas of work in this regard for the regions of Siberia and the Far East. First, forest chemical production, which was quite developed in Soviet times but has lost its position in the modern Russian economy, despite the demand for these products on the domestic and world markets. Second, the forest climate project sector, which is still in its infancy but has great potential, aims to increase the absorption of greenhouse gases by terrestrial ecosystems as part of global climate initiatives. In the forest climate sector, there are discussions about the potential for useful synergies between the goals of the forestry business, the government, society, and climate project customers with regard to the joint development of forest nurseries, which were previously successfully used by the forestry industry to carry out reforestation measures in accordance with their obligations under current legislation
