Abstract

This study analyzes folklore texts of the Samoyedic peoples as sources for this ethnic group’s knowledge of plant life and the nutritional and medicinal properties of plants. The authors chose the Nenets as the representative ethnic group for this group, and the study’s materials were Nenets folklore texts collected by researchers throughout the 20th century and academically published in two editions. An analysis of this body of folklore for the Nenets ethnic group’s knowledge of plant life allowed us to conclude that the representations of plant elements and properties in Nenets folklore can be divided into four groups: detailed descriptions of the surrounding environment, the use of plants in the making of household and sacred objects, and, most rarely, examples of plant consumption for food. However, the folklore texts do not provide evidence of the use of plants for medicinal purposes
