Abstract

Based on the materials of an interview with the former herder of the reindeer herd No. 2 of the State Farm “Polyarny” in the Krasnoselkup District of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, a unique method of Selkup large-herd reindeer herding, practiced in the conditions of the taiga and large swamps (forest tundra), is considered. This method combined elements of the tundra and taiga reindeer herding systems. The following were borrowed from the tundra system: large herds, migrations carried out for the sake of preserving the reindeer population rather than moving to hunting grounds, guarding the herd on reindeer sleds, shepherds on duty, the use of reindeer herding dogs, and mass slaughter of reindeer. The following were taken from taiga reindeer herding: shorter migration routes laid through large nutritious swamps and pine forests, a “base” of tents that moved only twice during the spring-summer and five to seven times during the frosty period of the year, the use of smoke smokers, and free grazing of reindeer in August-September
