Abstract: The paper discusses various ways of expressing the linguistic category of participation. The concept of participation was introduced into cultural anthropology by L. Levy-Bruhl. Participation is concerned with people’s feelings towards objects around them, as well as with the evaluation of the object’s relation to the speaker. The category can be expressed by a variety of means in the Russian language. This article argues that the indirect use of Russian relation nouns (drug ‘friend’, brat ‘brother’ etc.) is most comprehensively explained by the theory of participation.
