Abstract

This article provides an overview of the sources whose authors address the study of visual culture. Theoretical views on the visual culture of such figures as Klaus Hentschel, Renzo Baldasso, Herbert Butterfield, William John Thomas Mitchell, Hal Foster, Laura Mulvey, Joen Berger, Pal Miklos, Gyorgy Kepes, Hans Belting, Gottfried Boehm, Horst Bredekamp, Daniil Pivovarov and Vladimir Zhukovsky are considered. Visual culture is considered as a sphere of culture where idealization occurs in the form of creation, preservation and translation of standards in a visual form, that is, in a form consisting of visual signs. In the practical part of the article, one of the topical issues of the modern theory of culture and art is the problem of defining genre boundaries in a work of fine art. To analyze this problem, paintings representing the Krasnoyarsk visual culture, written on historical subjects, were selected. Historical painting, representing the most complex forms of artistic imagery, has a significant representative potential, revealing in the study the whole set of features of a specific regional visual culture. The theoretical foundations of this study are the key provisions of B. Croce’s aesthetics on the importance in genre differentiation of not the material status of the work and its external formal characteristics, but the content factors revealed speculatively in the process of perception of the work, as well as the key provisions of M. M. Bakhtin’s theory of the pragmatic orientation of the genre as a communicative cultural and philosophical category. The methodological basis was the conceptual provisions of the theory of artistic culture and the theory of fine art by V. I. Zhukovsky, N. P. Koptseva and D. V. Pivovarov. The empirical research is based on a source–based analysis of the works of fine art of Krasnoyarsk of the 20th – early 21st centuries, correlated with the genre of historical painting. The artistic images of the selected paintings are analyzed by means of philosophical and art criticism analysis
