Abstract

There is an analysis and interpretation of the paintings of Anatoly M. Znak (the People’s Artist of Russia, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Arts and Professor) based on the formal stylistic method in this study. The objective of the study is to empirically identify the modern possibilities of formal stylistic analysis and the problems of further development of this method in the context of interdisciplinarity of humanities. The thematic justification of this research’s area lies in modern interpretive practices when art historians move away from a specific artistic text so the methods of formal construction of a work remain on the periphery of scientific knowledge. The study emphasizes that the identification of artistic value is a multi-layered interpretation, which is impossible without an analysis of all the formal components of the artistic language. There is the history of the emergence and development of the formal stylistic method and the processes of its transformation over more than a century of development briefly examined. This scientific method is constantly enriched in the process of communication with works of art and depends on the goals set, on the experience and individual qualities of the researcher. The art historical analysis of the A. M. Znak’s paintings concludes that the significance of the formal-stylistic method is important in the analysis of art works. The directions of interpretation and deepen the meaningful points could be further expand on the basis of the artistic text of work art due to the use of methodological tools from other areas of humanities
