Abstract

Using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, the contents of eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3, EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3, DHA) were quantified in 15 commercially available soft gel capsules from 13 Russian and 2 international manufacturers. Comparison of the analytical results with the label information revealed that the actual EPA and DHA contents matched the labeled amounts in two cases only. In all the other cases, the measured contents ranged from 16 % to 85 % of the stated quantities. Therefore, it is recommended to verify the EPA and DHA contents of commercial soft gel capsules – biologically active dietary supplements – before consumption for preventive, health-promoting, or research purposes
