- Abstract
The study uses the increased significance of variants in connection with the cultural turn in philology as its point of departure. The first subchapter deals with the role of variants in philological thinking and in the practice of philologists and text editors. The second subchapter points to the multiformity of translated texts and the connections between variants and translation strategies, arguing that a new approach to the material dimension of texts can also be applied in translation studies, that variants play an important role in translation work, and that they are also related to translation strategies. Replacing the static concept of text with a dynamic one sheds new light on the variants of translation texts (created during the process of creation, text refinement, and preparation of new editions). As a case study, Gábor Devecseri’s Hungarian translations of Homer is examined, in which the dynamics of variants greatly influenced the development of translation strategies
